Ben Frost @ Semi-Permanent Sydney ‘08
Ben Frost is an artist who spoke at SP’08 about his works and inspiration. I found his insight interesting, as well as entertaining. A free-style talker, with free-flowing ideas to discuss. I started taking a few notes on his talk.
Ben’s work takes place in the realm of social commentary, and it was great to hear this expanded up. Below are a few comments about his work.
- Society doesn’t see what is really happening. They don’t venture down the back streets. They take the safe and secure paths, never venturing. They don’t see it.
- Inspired by past styles and movements. It’s not a work existing in isolation. Part of a stream of an idea. Likes to create intense powerful works, through the use of layering.
- Looks at the effects of consumerism and capitalism on society as a foundation. See advertising as an invasion of personal space. Sees a loss of innocence through advertising and media.
- Explores the relation of characters. Notes that characters are usually seen as linear, existing in a bubble. Mix and Merge the streams, juxtapose.
