High Quality Linkin’
There’s been so much quality on the internet recently I’ve had troubles finding ways of blogging it all in detail. Rapid fire seems unfair on your eyes, and nothing is no good to anyone. So we’ve got a round up instead.
- Paul Rand: Thoughts and despair on logo design
Investigates the purpose and function of a logo. From the guy who developed IBM, Apple and more. -
“Passive communication about my life. I don’t want to interrupt or spam my friends every time I have some little bit of news, take some new pictures, or get a random thought, but I have no problem blogging or Twittering those things, or uploading to photo sharing sites (which all have social features now). Similarly, I enjoy seeing this information from my friends (but I wouldn’t want them calling me on the phone to tell me about their lunch every day).” Ben Barren via lachstock
- The cost of security: 7 years of spending by the DHS
A realistic look at Airport Security. “the probability of attacks in the style of 9/11 dropped close to zero in the few months after the attacks when airlines installed—at relatively low cost—simple cockpit barricades.” -
Are most websites designed with this kind of principle in mind? Not really. Most of them are still designed as though people read the news the same way they do in the paper — starting at the front and moving page by page towards the back (of course, many people don’t read the newspaper this way either, but that’s another story). In reality, people come from every conceivable angle, dropping into stories and then disappearing, finding them through links and posts and Digg and elsewhere.
If the news is that important, it will find me.(Wade:Perhaps it’s wishful thinking for not paying attention to the media, but it makes sense) Mathew Ingram via lachstock

When I used to wait tables, one thing I learned early on was that a small mistake by me or the kitchen was actually an opportunity for me to make more money. Customers were routinely far more impressed with a well-handled mistake (which they actively noticed) than with trouble-free service (which they took for granted). As far as my tips were concerned, it was better for a steak to be overcooked, replaced, and proactively taken off the bill than for it to come out perfectly the first time. Remiel via Daring Fireball

“Geer is considered to be an expert in computer security and has testified before Congress on multiple occasions and has served in formal advisory roles for the Federal Trade Commission, the National Science Foundation, the Treasury Department, the Nation…”
