Blog of Wade Making Connexions

Blog Spam Testing?

I got a very weird kind of comment spam on my blog the other day. It was link spamming, but to google.com. It was done by a bot, as it picked up my site and used PHPBB code instead of HTML.

What interests me most about this is what’s coming next. This is obviously a recon attack. When searching for the username from the comment, I find 867 hits, from a very very large variety of blogs, all saying the same thing about Google.

Below is an image of the comment spam(click for full view). I don’t want to type any of the guy’s details, otherwise I’ll become a marked man.

Comment Spam WTF?

Does anyone have any ideas? trackback/e-mail me at the usual spots if so…..

I had a similar experience with a photo gallery I had set up on my site. The first wave of bots posted a couple of comments with a really weird URL (http://[ (...) ]). It looked like gibberish, but it actually resolves to the W3 protocol page. Of course, with the recon complete, the whole herd was in next. It was comment spam galore.
I didn’t see a follow up on your blog so I’m curious about what happened after the recon. Were you deluged with comment spam?
